Birkbeck Wood in the Gunnerside Gill valley in summertime

Gunnerside Gill and Birkbeck Wood

The narrow valley of Gunnerside Gill is just upstream from the village of Gunnerside.

Whereas the upper reaches of Gunnerside Gill has been ravaged by years of lead mining, further downstream such mining was unprofitable. As a result the natural woodland of Birbeck Wood remains largely intact.
