winter dawn over Haweswater and High Street from Corpse Road

Haweswater from The Corpse Road

Haweswater Reservoir and The High Street ridge, seen from The Corpse Road above Mardale in the eastern Lakes.

Before Mardale was cleared to allow for the construction of Haweswater reservoir there were a few villages in the valley. However there was no church so for the inhabitants to bury their dead on consecrated ground the corpses had to be carried to Shap. The route taken was a well worn track called the Corpse Road.
