two mute swans on a calm elter water lake under cloudy skies with langdale pikes as backdrop

Elter Water swans

As the word ‘elter’ is old English for swan it seems only right to take a photo of swans swimming on Elter Water. However the swans are normally nowhere to be seen when I visit as its often around dawn and they’re asleep. And I don’t want to wake them up as they’re known for their bad temper!

The visit on which this photo was taken was at a more reasonable hour on a still winter’s day, the Pikes forming a great backdrop. As a result the swans were awake and active but their mood wasn’t any the better for it!
