Hardknott Fort aerial view from Harter Fell Eskdale bathed in evening light

Hardknott Fort from Harter Fell

The remains of Hardknott Fort, or Mediobogdum, are found on a western spur of Hard Knott fell. The garrison here was located on the main road linking the Roman settlements at Ambleside and Ravenglass.

This view of the fort was taken from the summit of Harter Fell which dominates the view to the south of Hardknott Pass. At the end of a cloudy day in the fells Eskdale was momentarily bathed in evening light.
