autumnal birch tree at Hodge Close slate quarry

Hodge Close silver birch

Hodge Close Quarry is just one of many slate workings in the Tilberthwaite Valley, between Little Langdale and Coniston. Now long since closed, Hodge Close is now used for recreation by divers and climbers.

This abstract photo shows the contrast between the green-grey slate of the quarry walls and the white, green and yellow of an autumnal silver birch perched on its rim.
