About Thirlmere and St. Johns in the Vale

Gallery of Lake District photos from the Thirlmere Reservoir valley, from Dunmail Raise in the south to Low Rigg and St. Johns in the Vale to the north.

By Lake District standards the Thirlmere Valley is quiet, especially considering its location between the busy Ullswater and Borrowdale valleys. I am guessing this is partly explained by the lack of any settlements of any size in the valley.

Before Victorian times there used to be a village called Wythburn here but now only the church remains. The rest of the village was evacuated and the valley flooded to create the Thirlmere Reservoir to help provide water to Manchester.
