River Gelt in autumn

The River Gelt rises in the far east of Cumbria near the county’s border with Northumberland. It flows westwards to near Carlisle where it meets the River Irthing.

Near Brampton the river flows through the wooded gorge of Gelt Wood, a mixed deciduous woodland which is very colourful in autumn.
