Roppa Cross North in heather on Helmsley Moor during August sunset

Roppa Cross North at sunset

Roppa Cross North on Helmsley Moor above Bilsdale at sunset, one of a number of medieval marker posts in the North York Moors.

The cross once stood at over six feet tall and helped guide the monks of Reivaulx Abbey over these often inhospitable moors. The base and a small part of the cross are all that remain now.
